Last night the Academy Awards took place in Hellywood. The line that put the entire event into perspective was from host Billy Crystal:
“Tonight, enjoy yourselves, because nothing can take the sting out of the world’s economic problems like watching millionaires present each other with golden statues.”
Ecclesiastes 1:2 (NKJV)
2 “Vanity[Absurdity, Frustration, Futility, Nonsense] of vanities,” says the Preacher;
“Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”
King Solomon knew about gold, women and parties!
The absurdity of the moment comes down to this – the separation between the haves and the have not in this World expands while we slide further away from a Divine moral compass. For some bizarre diabolical reason we have allowed Hellywood to become our moral compass and to blaze a spotlight on a “red carpet” that leads to destruction.
Matthew 7:13-14 (NKJV)
13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.
There was a time when I believed that someone with the right morals, spiritual beliefs and boldness to proclaim them could use the Hellywood system to shine the Light. However, after many years of kicking at a door that did not want what I had to offer I had to let go of those goals and dreams. When I did, I realized the obvious – to play on the Devil’s playground you have to play by his rules and even more so, he had to pick you to play!
All that glisters is not gold;
Often have you heard that told:
Many a man his life hath sold
But my outside to behold:
Gilded tombs do worms enfold.
Had you been as wise as bold,
Young in limbs, in judgement old
Your answer had not been inscroll’d
Fare you well, your suit is cold. – Merchant of Venice; William Shakespeare
Panning for gold often results in finding pyrite (fool’s gold) which reflects more light than authentic gold does. Gold in its raw form appears dull and does not glitter.
Having seen and held an Oscar while visiting a friend in Beverly Hills I can tell you two things – they are not all they seem to be and they fade over time – very much like the award itself. It truly is a “fool’s gold”!
As the World plunges toward some sort of cataclysmic event and our economy sinks like the Titanic, the fleshly arrogance of the rich & well to do who party while the boat sinks remains the same.
J.R.R. Tolkien gave us a poem with a different perspective in his fantasy novel, The Lord of the Rings.
- All that is gold does not glitter,
- Not all those who wander are lost;
- The old that is strong does not wither,
- Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
- From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
- A light from the shadows shall spring;
- Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
- The crownless again shall be king.
18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.
Let those who have ears hear, hear….until then we are leaving the LIGHT on for the Return of THE KING!
