The Cost of the Upper Room Experience

The cost of the Upper Room Experience is $77.77 but if you act now we will throw in original monogrammed handkerchiefs from the Apostle Paul and the Lord’s recipe for Sea of Galilee Grilled Fish at no extra cost.

Sorry, couldn’t resist a “commentary” on the shameless shilling and selling that goes on in the Christian church today.  It doesn’t matter that the Lord overturned the tables of the moneychangers and sellers in the Temple TWICE, we continue the practice of turning the House of the Lord into a marketplace.  I guess they didn’t get the memo.

The Upper Room Experience, what is it?

We’ve been studying the Book of Acts and the Upper Room now on The Porch since March 2010.  It’s a story that never gets old and new things are discovered all of the time.  The story starts out with the Lord’s Ascension into Heaven, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost and the explosive signs and wonders that led to equally explosive evangelism.  And, if you listened to many of the teachers of today, that is where the story seems to end.  They hesitate to tell you about AFTER the Upper Room.  However, as you get into Acts Chapter 5 the Upper Room Experience takes a more serious turn. How could it not?  The Book of Acts Church was turning the world and the kingdom of darkness upside down.

In Acts Chapter 5 we are told about Ananias and Sapphira, his wife, lying to Peter about the amount of money they received for selling their land.  Apparently, Ananias and Sapphira made a commitment to put the entire proceeds from the sale of their land in the communal treasury just as the Levite Barnabas from Cyrus did at the end of Acts 4.  However, somewhere along the way they decided to secretly hold back part of the profits for themselves by lying about how much the land was sold for.  Whether it was greed or a desire to appear more philanthropic than it really was, it was a direct affront to the Holy Spirit.  When Peter, who was given revelation knowledge of this by the Holy Spirit, confronts Ananias and Sapphira about their deceit they both dropped dead at the Apostle’s feet.  It’s not without reason that the scripture says,

Acts 5:11 ( NKJV ) So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.

So, the first cost of the Upper Room Experience is personal integrity, humility and honesty.

The second cost of the Upper Room Experience is equally as dangerous and prevalent.  The second cost of exercising the world changing Dunamis power of the Holy Spirit is that it may cost you your life.

“What?!” you say.  “Cost me my life?”

Yes, that’s exactly what I said.  I may cost you your life.  I didn’t say will cost you because only God can determine that but the Biblical example we have in the Book of Acts shows that the same world we are shaking and changing is under the control of the devil and his angels.  For some odd reason they don’t take kindly to our shaking and changing their world and feel even less friendly when we plunder their “goods”  (Matthew 12:29) by using the Promise of the Father to destroy their works.  In fact, it infuriates them to the point of taking retaliatory action against the church.  The Book of Acts Church learned this firsthand almost immediately.  The enemy will try to persuade us to stop what we are doing and to play it safe by going back to the dead religious activities that were practiced before.  If that doesn’t work, they will use the world system to threaten the Church with incarceration or bodily harm.  If we are too sold out to the Lord to be persuaded or threatened, they will up the stakes by inspiring the world to kill us – something the world is all too willing to oblige.

How do I know that? This I know for The Bible tells me so…

In Acts Chapter 4 Peter and John are thrown into jail for the healing of the man lame from birth at the Beautiful Gate entrance to the Temple (Acts 3:1-10).  Peter and John are then arrested for their public evangelism and teachings, thrown into common prison and scourged with whips.  Acts Chapters 6 & 7 offer us the account of the first martyr for the Lord, Stephen, who takes advantage of the Lord’s promise from Mark 13:11 to not worry beforehand what to say or do when they arrest you. The Holy Spirit will speak for you. Stephen takes the Lord at His Word and allows the Holy Spirit to speak through him.  His inspired reasoning so enrages the Jewish council that they stone him to death for his crime of telling the truth to confront their spiritual hypocrisy.

Acts 6:8-10 ( NKJV ) 8And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people. 9Then there arose some from what is called the Synagogue of the Freedmen (Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and those from Cilicia and Asia), disputing with Stephen. 10And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke.

Acts 7:51-58 ( NKJV ) 51“You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you. 52Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers, 53who have received the law by the direction of angels and have not kept it.”
54When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.
55But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, 56and said, “Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” 57Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord; 58and they cast him out of the city and stoned him.

Signs and wonders, Spirit lead reasoning and telling the truth about the Lord (the Spirit’s and the church’s primary responsibility) cost Stephen his life.  It’s right there in the black and white of The Word and the red of Stephen’s blood.

After this bloodshed the persecution of the church INCREASES, as do the signs, wonders and evangelism of the church, and we pretty much know the rest of the story.  Suffice it to say that the Upper Room Experience is so dramatic and explosive that the enemy of our souls, Satan and his angels, make it their priority to stop us AT ANY COST.

So, why am I telling you this?  Am I trying to discourage you from seeking the Upper Room Experience?  Absolutely not!  If you know anything about me or what I teach I believe it’s the only thing that will help us to fulfill the Great Commission in these End Times.  It’s also the only thing that will allow us to persevere and be productive for the Lord.  But, I want you to understand that there is a price for it.  A well-worn line from the movie Spiderman is spoken by the character of Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben, played by Cliff Robertson – “with great power comes great responsibility”.  This line could have easily come from the Book of Acts and the lips of one of the Apostles.

With the world shaking, life changing Dunamis power of the Holy Spirit, the Promise of the Father that comes from the Throne Room itself, we must understand the responsibility of personal integrity and holiness it demands.  We must also recognize and accept the Biblical documented fact that when we push the enemy they WILL push back.  I’ve read commentary by well meaning teachers that “the devil fears a praying believer on their knees” and wondered what Book they read.  The devil, his fallen angels and their demonic offspring are too deranged and enraged to fear anything.  Their “minds” are warped beyond reason and they fear nothing.  If they had any sense of fear would they, in the midst of a world war against one another, turn their weapons on the Lord, His angels and the saints of God when they split the sky as related in Revelation 19?  If they will make war with the King of kings, His armies and the hosts of Heaven at that point what do you think they will do to a flesh and blood Believer now?

When they see you clad in the Armor of God, as listed in Ephesians 6, do they see it as a fashion statement or declaration from you that you are prepared for a fight they are all too willing to give you?  It’s not your intention that motivates them but their intention – to destroy you and anything that reminds them of the One who cast them out of Heaven and defeated them.  Our intention must always be to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8).

I sincerely hope that this will not dissuade you from seeking the Upper Room Experience but if you do I want you to make a quality decision.  The life of a world changing, signs & wonders Believer in Yeshua/Jesus is not always easy but it is always rewarding.  For most, that reward is not of this world but of the next.  If you understand and accept the price that will be paid hear the Words of the Lord from John 20:22, “Receive the Holy Spirit”.

It’s yours if you want it.  It’s a prepaid gift from the Throne Room itself. All that you must do is accept it and then use it.

The Porch – Greater Things

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-vminw-1648076

The Lord promised us that we would greater things than He did when He sent back the Holy Spirit.  Pentecost fulfilled that promise and the “greater things” began to occur.  His promises are still in effect and those greater things are available to us now.

The Porch – Harvest Time

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-a4ijj-1633cbe

The period between Passover and Shavuot/Pentecost is known as Counting the Omer to prepare for the harvest wave offering to God. It foreshadows the importance of the harvest to the Lord and His representation and participation in that harvest. Harvest time was important and still is.

Choosing Insanity

If you look on the Internet, you will find a quote attributed to Albert Einstein that says, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”  While that seems like something a very smart man like Einstein would say there’s no proof that he ever actually said it.  In fact, there seems to be proof that it wasn’t said by Einstein at all unless done from the grave.  As  Garson O’Toole (a pen name used by the self-proclaimed  “The Internet’s Foremost Quote Investigator”) writes in his book, correct recognition for this quote should go to sociology professor William Bruce Cameron of Bradley University, who included it in some of articles as well as a 1963 sociology textbook . Einstein apparently wasn’t associated with the saying until the mid-1980s, some three decades after his death. If you wish to know more about that you can visit this link to read what O’Toole believes. This isn’t about its source but more about its message.

Whether Einstein said it or not it’s smart and deserves consideration. Ask anyone who keeps making the same decisions over and over with no change in the outcome.  They will tell you the insanity of it all. I know.  I’ve been there.  The frustration can create a paralysis of analysis that hinder us coming to my senses because we focus on the outcome and not the source.  You not only feel insane but adding insult to injury you also feel very foolish.  Once I realized that I was the one creating the resulting outcome to a recurring problem in my life I was set free to make the change needed to trade the insanity of my choices for freedom of the Lord’s.

Don’t beat yourself up.  We all do it.  We keep allowing the same people back into our lives thinking that this time will be different.  It almost never is different because it’s the same person coming back into your life. People do not spontaneously change for the better.  There is no magic potion that turns them into the person they should be and not the person destroying your life, with your help that is. Choice and free will is always a two-edged sword that cuts both ways.  I believe that’s why the author of Hebrews 4:12 (who I believe is Paul speaking with Luke writing) compared the Word of God with a two-edged sword.

Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV) 12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

It is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of the soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart. (Amplified version)

Like a surgeon’s scalpel the Word of God cuts right to the heart of the matter – the human heart. We are the ones making the decisions that appear to be insanity because there is something inside of us inspiring us to do so.  Bad programming instilled into us by others and then ourselves keeps resulting in the same answers to the same problems.  Free will was given to us by God so that we, from our heart, made our choices not out of compulsion but of submission to Him and His will for our lives.  Submission begins when we admit we are the source of our problems.

If a thing is free to be good it is also free to be bad. And free will is what has made evil possible. Why, then, did God give them free will? Because free will, though it makes evil possible, is also the only thing that makes possible any love or goodness or joy worth having.  C.S. Lewis, The Case for Christianity

I believe that we choose insanity because it’s easier than doing what is necessary to change or fix the situation.  Whether it’s the wrong job or the wrong person we make choices based on our own set of preferences and desires.  We want change but we don’t want the discomfort that comes from it.  We want the right person in our life, but we don’t want the Lord to choose them for us which means waiting patiently until we are ready for His best for us.  Even when He opens a door and shows a narrow path to the positive change that we seek we don’t want the unknown of the journey, so we unhappily stay where we are complaining the entire time.  Worse we pray and subtly blame God for our bad decisions.  It’s always easier to falsely blame God’s direction or the devil deception for the outcome of our flawed choices.  Deflection never leads to correction.

Patient: Doctor, it hurts when I do this.

Doctor: Don’t do that.

The cure for the insanity of our life starts from within.  Seek the Lord to show you why you make the choices that you do.  Ask Him to show you the way to correct those choices and to heal the areas that inspire them. I know that when you do, He will gladly show you what you need to see and then it’s up to you to make the corrections necessary for positive change in your life.  The relief that comes from it will inspire you to continue the journey. Stop choosing the insanity of your flesh and seek the clarity in heart, mind, body, soul and spirit His Spirit brings. He is even willing and able to help you fix the mess you created.  It’s up to you.

Proverbs 3:5-8 (AMP)  Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart
And do not rely on your own insight or understanding.
In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him,
And He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way].
 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the Lord [with reverent awe and obedience] and turn [entirely] away from evil.
It will be health to your body [your marrow, your nerves, your sinews, your muscles—all your inner parts]
And refreshment (physical well-being) to your bones.

The Bible: Do you know it or just know about it?

Over the last 30 plus years to studying and teaching The Word I’ve come across many people who know about the Bible but don’t actually know it. They’ve never opened it for themselves and have sat somewhere like little birds in a nest seeking out their pre-chewed spiritual food.

The Bible’s 66 books – 39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament – were written by 40 different authors over a period of 1,500 years. These authors lived in different places at different times, in different cultures and in most cases no proximity to the writings that came before. They did not have the books, commentaries and access to knowledge that we do today. They were from many different occupations and lifestyles, but the focus of what they have written is the same – to reveal God’s heart and will for mankind.  One collection of diverse books that coalesce into the story of God’s love for His children and His attempt to be reconciled to them at all costs. Even if He’s the one that has to pay it.

These human authors were varied in their levels of education and knowledge. We have writing from Solomon, the wisest king who ever lived. There are historical accounts from Moses, who was raised and trained in the Egyptian palace. It contains letters from Paul, who learned under Gamaliel, a leading authority in the Sanhedrin, before his conversion. On the complete other end of the spectrum, the Bible includes writings from unschooled fishermen like Peter and John.  And yet all these books come together into a cohesive narrative from beginning to end.

These writers believed that their writings did not come from training or knowledge but were  “by inspiration of God”

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NKJV) 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

That means it was not their own ideas they were writing down. The source of the information was outside of their natural ability to create.

2 Peter 1:20-21 (NKJV) 20knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

They believed that it was inspired by God and did not come from one’s own personal or special interpretation as no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.  This is shown from Moses, to Samuel, to Elijah and all the prophets as well as the writers of the New Testament.  This wasn’t their story they were telling but God’s.  To listen to those who say ignore any part of The Bible because it doesn’t line up with their paradigm would be the height of intellectual and spiritual ignorance.  You cannot ignore the cohesive connected nature of The Bible from Genesis to Revelation.

The Bible’s collection of 66 books written by those 40 different authors, on three different continents, in three different languages, over a period of 1500 years have a marvelous, supernatural unity.  40 men of such diverse backgrounds and experiences could never have written with such unity and agreement without Divine assistance. The Bible has proven itself to be from God theologically, scientifically, archaeologically, historically and even medically.  How could these men of such diverse backgrounds know the things they did without the help of the Holy Spirit?  References to astronomy and even quantum physics before they were discovered are filtered throughout The Bible.  Men from such various cultures such as the Egyptian culture, Jewish culture, Greek and Roman culture, and even some with no culture at all coming together into a cohesive writing that even with a 400-year gap of silence stayed in perfect unison and clarity makes no sense in the natural.  That’s because it’s not natural.  It’s SUPERnatural!

No, any effort to ignore or diminish the value of The Bible is done from personal preference and with specific prejudicial intent.  God inspired these writings to communicate to humanity His heart and mind.  Offering them a plan of redemption and restoration that only He could offer in a way that only He could fulfill.  The knowledge and answers are there for anyone who wants them.  Lack of the knowledge of God and His Word have sent people into bondage and led to their destruction.

The choice is ours whether to be willfully ignorant or spiritually awake.  He can be found by all who seek Him so seek Him while He may be found.  Don’t just know about The Bible.  Know The Bible by reading it for yourself. Open your heart and mind to what He has to say.  You won’t regret it doing so as much as you will regret someday not doing it. The choice is yours.

God gave us free will to choose to do right.  Free will to choose to love Him and be obedient.  He gave that to us so that our relationship with Him wouldn’t be of coercion but permission.  When we choose Him and His love we choose life.
